Kareena will wear Bikini inTashan Yash Raj Film

Yash Raj Films is all set to kick off the year 2008 in splendid style through “TASHAN”. The movie directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who was the screenplay & dialogue writer of mega hits like “Dhoom”, its sequel “Dhoom:2” and “Guru”, marks the return of one of the most loved on-screen pairs of Bollywood- Akshay Kumar & Saif Ali Khan.

With TASHAN, even Anil Kapoor makes a comeback to Yash Raj banner after a long gap of 15 years. His last film with the banner was “Lamhe” (1992), which also starred Sri Devi, Waheeda Rehman & Anupam Kher. The movie will also have Kareena Kapoor playing a very glamorous role. She will play the romantic interest of Akshay and Saif in the movie.

Akshay Kumar & Saif Ali Khan had a spate of successes, the biggest being Yash Raj’s very own “Yeh Dillagi”(1994) & director Sameer Malkan’s “Main Khiladi Tu Anaari” (1994). Apart from this, the pair was seen together in “Tu Chor Main Sipahi” (1996), “Keemat” (1998) and “Aarzoo” (1999). Saif has already been a regular with Yash Raj (“Hum Tum”, “Salaam Namaste” and the much recent “Ta Ra Rum Pum”), but Akki’s last flick with them was “Dil to Pagal Hai” (1998).

Anil Kapoor will be seen playing a negative role in the film. Although, he has played characters with negative shades but it would be his first role as a villain.

Director Vijay Krishna Acharya, also known as “Victor”, has journeyed from films to television to films. He became assistant to Kundan Shah on “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa” starring Shah Rukh Khan. Then he moved to television and scripted non-formulaic serials like “Son Pari”, “Just Mohabbat” and the popular “Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi” (he was the creative & story supervisor for the first 260 episodes). But he couldn’t resist himself and returned to big screen while lending his credits to “Dhoom”, “Dhoom:2”, “Pyaar Ke Side Effects” and “Guru”. TASHAN would be his debut as a director.

Miss World 2000

It’s hard to express in words how wonderful my 365 days of glory, fame and responsibility as Miss World 2000 have been.

The beauty and glory of the crown as it sat on my brow inspired me to help as many people as I could during my reign. But nothing preoccupied me so much as disadvantaged children - a cause that’s always been close to my heart - and I was proud to use my position to help in any way I could. In fact, I was never happier than during my work helping children as an honorary Ambassador of the Society for Education and Betterment of the Girl Child, in India. I was particularly moved by the sight of young girls working or bringing up children rather than getting their education. I was determined to help people understand that a woman can offer much more to society than babies and recipes. A woman has within her the power to create, nurture and transform. If she is sufficiently ambitious, determined and gifted then she can achieve anything!

I visited schools, hospitals, families and orphanages, trying to show people through my own example what women can achieve. If I can do it - anyone can! Above all, I am proud that I could contribute in my own small way to many different causes.

In a world that is torn apart by hunger, terror and distress, I truly believe that the voice of our soul is the only guiding light to a better tomorrow. Mother Theresa herself chose to lead by example and gave everyone hope - particularly in my country. This most revered saint blessed the people of this world by treading paths that were not left in the dark. I am a regular visitor to her "Prem Niwas" in my hometown, where my brother and I have celebrated festivals and Christmas with the residents, ever since we were children.

That sanity I stand for. That tolerance I stand for. And that I stand for.

Miss World has reinforced my belief in giving back to society. Sharing some of the goodness and privilege that I have been blessed with. In essence, I speak for peace, love, tolerance and sanity. I feel strongly that we should love our fellow man, and respect the flora and fauna of this world. Only then can we keep our planet healthy and happy.

I have travelled the world on the shoulders of a giant - the Miss World organisation. During my amazing year I have met incredibly glamorous, privileged people as well as witnessing the hopelessness and despair of the disadvantaged. And the contrast is sobering. But hopefully through our efforts to alleviate suffering we have been able to bring some hope to those less fortunate than ourselves. It makes me wonder - can we ever strike a balance? A penny for your thoughts…I feel like I’ve gained a lifetime’s experience in one short year. And I am proud to be a part of the Miss World Family, continually striving to be a beauty with purpose! As I relinquish my crown and my reign, I pledge my continuing support and goodwill to this organisation and everything it stands for. I am there with you in spirit. My love, my support and my sense of duty will always be there. Thank you to everyone for the great learning experience Miss World 2000 has been. It has made an invaluable contribution to every aspect of my life. But above all, this year has confirmed one belief: that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world… Thanking you, I remain, yours sincerely.

Priyanka Chopra

BEAUTY WITH A PURPOSE

Beneath the glamorous image one of the world’s best known pageants there is a serious purpose and key objective.

PAUL HUNWICK talked to the Miss World Chief Executive JULIA MORLEY, about the mission behind the image.

Sitting in her modest office in Soho’s Golden Square - the headquarters of the Miss World Organisation - Julia Morley, dressed immaculately in a black trouser suit, is looking remarkably calm. She doesn’t look like a woman who, by the time you’re reading this, will have co-ordinated around a hundred contestants, teams of linguists and completed the scores of other tasks that have gone into putting on this very special 50th Miss World. Just how nerve wrecking is it?

"Oh, things in the run up to the event rarely happen exactly how one plans but it will work out in the end. As it does every year", enthuses Julia with the confidence of a woman who has pulled off the same mammoth task time after time.

ENLIGHTENED MISS WORLD

But it isn’t the glamour aspect that concerns Julia on this particular day. She’s more excited about learning, this morning that "little Sam" is going home after her successful operation at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Four-year-old Samanja Timilsina arrived in the UK some months ago with her father in the hope that surgeons at Great Ormond Street would be able to correct her deformed jaw. Her deformity was so severe it made eating almost impossible. This is just one example of an operation made possible - in part at least - by the efforts of Julia and her team of tireless Miss World helpers. Hence, the enlightened Miss World tag: "Beauty with a Purpose".

HELPING TO SAVE LIVES

Many people still don’t realise that behind the glamour of Miss World is a team of people constantly raising funds for worthy causes such as "Little Sam’s". After spending just ten minutes in Julia Morley’s company you realise the glamour factor is in fact just a small part of her job and an even smaller part of her motivation. "We know it’s a show with razzmatazz and glamour and we want to keep it that way but there’s a depth behind it. You have to have fun with fundraising so, beneath it all, what we are doing is helping to save lives," explains Julia with a warm determination.

"Whether it’s 1,000 children being educated in India, getting kids on the surface instead of down a coal mine or surgery such as Sam’s. It all matters. We don’t scream and shout about it but we are quietly very proud of the fact that many children’s lives have been saved thanks to the efforts of the Miss World Organisation and it’s supporters," confides Morley with modesty. Julia is also the International Vice President of the Variety Club International.

"So far we have raised over £100 million for children. We created the first children’s ward and King College Hospital. It has liver transplanting and grafting facilities and treats children from all over the world."

REMEBERING EL SALVADOR

"I remember one year in El Salvador after an earthquake," say Julia, "A makeshift children’s hospital had been placed in an unfortunate position at the base of a valley where the heat was over 42 degrees. Babies were laying five abreast in the cots. I knew I had no one on hand to help so I called several former Miss Worlds - and we put together a fashion show. The girls turned up at the hospital in jeans, all ready to work. One particular Miss World had just received her firs commission as an architect to build a six storey building in her home-land when I called, but she still came to offer her help despite that," explains Julia, revealing the determination and compassion of the girls.

"Before the show the children gave a service of thanks in the local church. The church itself was falling down but the sisters had promised God was on our side and not to worry. We agreed we wouldn’t weep at the service but one former Miss World simply couldn’t hold back the tears. The children rushed to comfort her and they said to me in Spanish "I expect she’s lost her mummy and daddy too."

ON A MISSION

"We went on to raise enough funds to build six pre-fabricated rooms to serve as a hospital," Julia explaines. "You can’t buy the feeling that kind of achievement gives you. There is a depth in this kind of work that is immeasurable. It wasn’t perhaps the slickest show in the world, that fashion show, but it is one example of what people can achieve if they work together."

"I’ve always been interested in people’s minds and communication as much as the fun aspects of life. If someone says something is impossible, that excites me. I think "let’s make it possible." The key is communication. Nothing is impossible."

To Julia Morley it is the challenge that leads to achievement, and it is her and her team’s achievements that help so many who need help.

Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai

Sun City, they call it ...and with my first visit to this exotic location in young, free South Africa, dawned a new chapter in my life. one with the coveted title of "Miss World 1994-95", an experience that has been enriching, enhancing and one that I shall truly treasure for a long time to come.

I was a second year student of architecture and a professional model when I came to represent my country on an international platform along with 86 other young girls from countries all over the world. And what more could one ask for than an audience with President Mandela himself, a man deservedly admired and respected the world over for his contributions towards humanity. With the end of this dream-like period of a month with such special beautiful girls (many of whom have remained friends), began my life as Miss World.

Media calls, fashion shoots, interviews and the beginning of a whirlwind lifestyle had begun.

My world travels included many countries, each one being special, unique and memorable in its own way: attending glamourous evenings in France and Germany, or raising funds in London for the women and children in Bosnia; fashion shoots and shows in Amsterdam, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and visits to Houston, Jamaica and exotic countries like Bermuda and South Africa was a treat; attending a peace conference in Sri Lanka and the Telethon in Iowa through Variety International; a state visit to Lithuania was very interesting, what with it being a relatively new country, as was the visit to Nepal, where meeting the Queen Aishwarya was memorable, since we share the same first name.

The year also broadened my horizons in every sense, helping me to truly break free of the barriers set up by man, of nationalities, gender, age and status, and helped me evolve as a person. It has undoubtedly opened doors to many opportunities, but it has also given me tremendous confidence as this year has brought me closer in touch with myself. This has given me a clearer perspective, as I now look upon life as a world-person, and I am glad to be part of the Family, created solely by an experience like the Miss World Contest.

Yes, it has been a very busy year and I've tried my best to do full justice to the privilege I was given and from it I have taken the wealth of knowledge and experience and am now ready to transcend into the reality of next year, glowing, enthusiastic and excited about yet another beginning, constantly pursuing excellence.

Pirivom Santhipom Movie Review

Visalakshi a.k.a. 'Sala' (Sneha) is the only daughter in a loving family. She is always amidst her friends and her home is a haven for the girls. Sala is a very homely and introvert girl and loves the tradition and values that come with big joint families, probably due to her being the only child in her family.

Natessan (Cheran), a soft-spoken guy, belongs to a huge and loving Nattukootai Chettiyar family. With his parents, he lives with a hoard of relatives in the form of uncles, aunties, sisters, cousins, niece and nephews, as a joint family. Natessan works with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), as an Assistant Engineer (AE) as the story begins.

Fate intervenes in the form of an arranged marriage between Natessan and Sala in a big and pompous Chettiyar wedding. Sala is very happy with her new family and all the chatter and commotion that come along while staying in a joint-family. She showers them with gifts and enjoys pleasing them and seeing them happy. But this happiness that Sala is enjoying is very short-lived.

Natessan, who is sick of living in a joint family, gets a much-needed transfer cum promotion to Attakatti, and relishes to spend quality time with his wife. Sala is ripped off her newly-found happiness and the joy of living in a joint family. The story moves on to tell you the overwhelming loneliness that she comes across in this village in a guest house, and how she yearns for someone to be with her, even if it is a lineman from the EB office or a sales lady.

How Natessan comes to terms with the truth about his wife's illness forms the rest of the story.

Famous Malayalam actor Jayaram portrays an important role in 'Pirivom... Sandhipom....' He plays the role of a local doctor and wields the key to unlock the emotional entangle between Natessan and Visalakshi.

Though the film is not a debate on the nuclear or joint family culture, the director has beautifully brought in the importance of relationships in a person's life. The film also touches the turmoil that a wife undergoes without voicing out her opinions and placing her husband's likes and dislikes prior to her own, even if it means that she has to suppress her emotions and give up her likings.

There are also some typical 'filmy' scenes like the one towards the climax when the nurse comes and says that Sala is getting better right after the doctor (Jayaram) finishes his counseling to the till-now-ignorant Natessan about his wife's likes and dislikes.

The director has taken extra care in going into the details of the Chettiyar culture, be it in the slang that the characters talk, the palatial homes or the backdrop of the songs. All these provide a visual treat to the audience.

Sneha as Sala has played her part well. She appears very natural and without make-up in most of the scenes, and this adds more beauty to this beautiful and talented actress.

Cheran on his part has done a good job. But it seems like this actor-director has underplayed his part. In most of the scenes he is seen either talking over the phone or working, and one might feel that he has not used his potential to the full extent.

Though Vidyasagar's songs have not created a whirlwind, there are a couple of pleasant numbers that gel with the story of the film. The song 'Eruvizhio siragadikkum…' in particular is a melody and it showcases the rich culture and tradition of the Nattukootai Chettiyar marriages to every detail.

‘Kanja’ Karuppu, M.S. Bhaskar, and team have provided the much-needed comedy interludes to this otherwise-slow paced movie.

One aspect that is worth mentioning is that, this film is a sharp contrast to most of the films that are releasing today. The film has 0% vulgarity and violence. We can, at any point in time, boldly watch 'Pirivom... Sandhipom....' with family and kids, without any embarrassment to either.

Director : Tarun Gopi switch to Telugu

Tarun Gopi’s style of filmmaking goes well with the Telugu audiences. He is getting numerous calls from Telugu producers to make films in Telugu.

But Tarun has different plans. Now that his ‘Kaalai’, featuring Silambarasan is released, he is now ready with a couple of scripts meant for Ajith and Vivek Oberoi.

However, it is learnt that he would soon enter Telugu Desam, if the projects meant for Ajith and Vivek Oberoi don’t get materialized in the near future.

Tarun Gopi has a unique script, which has just seven scenes. Two persons will be running through out the movie. The reason will be known at the end of the movie. The movie, if made, will add a different dimension to Tamil movies, says the director.

We just hope that he gets a chance to make the movie.

PWD gets major share

The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken away a lion’s share of the Rs.1.25 crore sanctioned for the district as temporary restoration for flood damage to cover the damages caused by rain in the month of December.

The Karur Municipality has been sanctioned Rs.16 lakh for carrying out works, including restoration of piped drinking water supply thrown into disarray following the flash floods in River Amaravathy.

All the same, a sum of Rs.10.90 lakh has been made available to the cooperative societies in Karur, Krishnarayapuram and Kulithalai taluks to meet the crop loss of farmers, but that is hardly the amount the farmers are demanding as damages to their crops. It is interesting to note that while the district recorded an average rainfall of 652.2 mm for the whole of 2007, rainfall in the month of December alone touched 214.7 mm.

While the PWD (River Conservation Division) walked away with Rs.50 lakh to meet the cost of plugging breaches in the irrigation and drainage channels in the Kulithalai and Krishnarayapuram taluks of the district, the PWD Ariyaru Division has been sanctioned Rs.21 lakh for works including setting right irrigation systems disturbed in the rain’s fury. The PWD Nankanjiyaru Division, under which a reservoir in the neighbouring Dindigul district suffered damages and water was allowed to drain off the dam, gets Rs. 10 lakh for meeting repair works’ cost.

After apportioning close to half the sanctioned amount to the PWD divisions, the State Government has allotted Rs.16 lakh to the Karur Municipality for setting right drinking water supply mains. Water supply to areas such as Pasupathypalayamis yet to be repaired.

The Uppidamangalam and Krishnarayapuram Town Panchayats get Rs.11.5 lakh while the Revenue Department has been sanctioned Rs.5.60 lakh. The Revenue Department would disburse the compensation for the families residing in 268 partially damaged houses and 64 fully damaged houses in the district.

The farmers’ cooperative societies in Karur taluk have been sanctioned Rs.1.34 lakh, while those in Krishnarayapuram taluk get Rs.1.54 lakh. Societies in Kulithalai taluk have been sanctioned Rs.8.02 lakh for meeting the crop loss of farmers in the respective regions.

learning curve

These days judges are trying to learn tricks that journos have putatively been masters of: learning complex subjects and delivering the goods quickly. That is particularly important as time is more valuable than money in business and markets. A government official told a fleeting acquaintance of Third Eye how judges are measuring up to the challenge in areas like intellectual property and complex capital market transactions.

At the beginning of a case involving a securities transaction, a judge asked a lawyer representing the capital market regulator Sebi, “What does the Sebi do? Do you actually...er... stock up the share certificates and all? How is your function different from that of a stock exchange?” The lawyer made a presentation in true corporate style and at the end of the five-day trial, the court delivered an order, which an official described as “fantastic”. He also said, “We are sure a lot of learning has gone into the process of giving that order.”

India's Test preparation

India is fending off angry reactions from home which have put a major distraction into the tourists' camp ahead of the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia.

Just two days after India posted one of their greatest Test wins, in Perth, effigies were being burned across the subcontinent over the axing of veteran batsman Sourav Ganguly from the one-day squad.

While it was effigies of Australian captain Ricky Ponting and umpires Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson that were being burned following the second Test in Sydney, incensed fans in Kolkata burned the image of Indian board president Sharad Pawar.

The anger came after Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were all left out of a youthful limited overs squad to contest the series against Australia and Sri Lanka, which starts in February.

The issue has provided an unwelcome distraction after the 72-run win in the third Test in Perth, especially as the three veteran batsmen will be part of the side to play in the fourth Test, which starts Thursday at Adelaide Oval.

The limited-overs axings dominated an Indian press conference, and at one stage interim coach Lalchand Rajput was asked by an Indian reporter how "our heroes" could be treated so badly.

Rajput attempted to return the focus back to the Test series, where India have the chance to square the contest 2-2.

"This is not the forum to discuss that because it is important for our team to focus on the Test," Rajput said.

"At the moment we are just concentrating on the Test series, we are not looking ahead for the one-dayers ... this is a very, very important game for us."

The issue has flared to the point where one cricket administrator hinted limited overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not want Ganguly in his side.

Ganguly had initially been a revelation for the one-day side on his return to international cricket in 2006, but his returns have declined in ensuing series, while neither Dravid nor Laxman have figured in the shorter format recently.

However it was Ganguly's name on the lips of most protesters, and the batsman sometimes known as "the Prince of Kolkata" found strong support from his home administrators.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) described Ganguly's sacking as a "grave injustice".

"What has been done is totally wrong, grave injustice is being done to him," CAB joint secretary Samar Pal said.

"It seems Dhoni did not want him in the side. Dhoni is more comfortable with juniors so he is in favour of axing seniors.

"But we will not sit idle. We will lodge a strong protest (with the BCCI)."

The issue became so heated that former Indian player Navjot Sidhu challenged chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar to "an open debate" on the axing.

"I challenge Mr Vengsarkar to an open debate. If he can convince me on why he dropped Ganguly then I will leave NDTV (where Sidhu commentates) for a lifetime, otherwise he has to quit," Sidhu said.

"You can't drop because you don't like somebody's face."

India must this week also resolve a tricky selection quandary for the final Test, over the make-up of the bowling attack.

The great performances of pacemen RP Singh, Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma in Perth makes them tough to drop if the tourists want Harbhajan Singh to bowl spin alongside captain Anil Kumble.

To squeeze Harbhajan in at what should be a spinners' venue would mean either dropping one of the quicks or struggling opener Wasim Jaffer, and playing only five specialist batsmen.

But the last time India played five bowlers backfired badly, as England bowled them out for 100 in the final innings of the Test in Mumbai in 2005, and India's 212-run defeat meant the series was squared 1-1.

Rajput declined to discuss selection for the Test, as he wanted to assess the pitch beforehand.

Davis Cup tie Bhupathi returns

NEW DELHI: Veteran doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi made a comeback for national duty as a five-member Indian team for the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup tie against Uzbekistan.

As non-playing captain, an injured Leander Paes will lead the team which also includes youngsters like Prakash Amritraj, Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Varman.

The home tie will be played here from February 8-10. Bhuapthi's return was expected as the doubles ace is required to represent the country to be eligible to participate in Beijing Olympics.

The Bangalore-based player did not play in India's last Davis Cup outing against the Uzbeks after his spat with Paes during the Doha Asian Games in December 2006.

In the away tie in Uzbekistan, India, comprising Paes, Vivek Shokeen, Karan Rastogi and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya had fared poorly and lost 1-4 to the hosts.

While Bhupathi will provide depth and experience to the Indian team, National hard court winner Ashutosh Singh and National grass court winner Vishnu Vardhan will be on the stand-bye to meet any exigency.

Meanwhile, chances of Paes taking the field cannot be ruled out during the home tie.

"He is upset as he was keen to play. He said, 'although I am not well, I will be very much there'," AITA Secretary Anil Khanna said.

By the close, the Sensex fell 875 points, or 4.97 percent, to 16,729.94. On the rival National Stock Exchange, the 50-share S&P Nifty index fell 309 points, or 5.9 percent, to 4,899.30.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram urged investors to remain calm, telling reporters "there is no reason at all to allow the worries of the Western world to overwhelm us."

He said he has assurances from the central bank and other banks "that enough liquidity will be provided to brokers and market players."

The declines came after Sensex plummeted 7.4 percent Monday, its second-biggest percentage loss ever. Since the start of the year, the index has fallen more than 17 percent.

India's markets have dropped the past seven sessions on spreading fears that the U.S. economy, a key market for Indian exports and outsourcing contracts, will contract this year.

Many analysts were pessimistic Tuesday, saying they expected more losses in coming days.

"Nobody expected this," said Rajeev Sampat, an investment analyst in Mumbai.

"The pace of the fall shocked people, nobody expected it to fall so much, so fast," he said. "In terms of recovery, we still have some way to catch up with global markets -- Japan and Hong Kong were down sharply. Even if there is a recovery it will be short-lived."

There was confusion about how far the Sensex had dropped before it was automatically shut down after first opening Tuesday.

Some brokers said their trading screens showed a drop of 9.75 percent before the shut down, a move that's supposed to be triggered only at 10 percent. The BSE's Web site showed a drop of 11.5 percent.

The S&P Nifty dropped 630 points, or 12 percent, to 4,578 points on the National Stock Exchange before trading was shut down for about an hour.

At the end of the day, the Oil and Natural Gas Corp. was the biggest loser, tumbling 13.6 percent to 962 rupees. Other major losers included tobacco and hotel conglomerate ITC Ltd., down 9.5 percent to 184 rupees; aluminum company Hindalco Industries Ltd., off 9.4 percent at 150 rupees, and automobile firm Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., down 9.1 percent at 611 rupees.

warning Bird flu disaster

"Bird flu is now everywhere. Every day we have reports of birds dying in farms," said leading poultry expert and treasurer of the Bangladesh Poultry Association M.M Khan.

"Things are now very, very serious and public health is under danger. The government is trying to suppress the whole scenario," Khan said, adding that farmers were also holding back from reporting cases.

People typically catch bird flu by coming into direct contact with infected poultry, but experts fear a pandemic if the H5N1 mutates into a form easily transmissible between humans.

Migratory birds have been largely blamed for the global spread of the disease, which has killed more than 200 people worldwide since 2003.

India beat Australia test victory

PERTH: India beat Australia by 72 runs on Saturday to end the home team's hopes of becoming the first team to win 17 Tests in-a-row in the third cricket Test at the WACA.

Faced with a target of 413, a fourth-innings target which had only been successfully chased once in Test history Australia began the day on 65-2 and was bowled out for 340, as India took wickets at a steady clip to prevent the home side gaining momentum.

India looked on course for a comfortable win when it reduced Australia to 253-8, but tailender Mitchell Johnson (50 not out) and Stuart Clark (32) used the long handle in a 73-run ninth wicket stand that briefly threatened an extraordinary comeback. India

It is the second time India has ended Australia's hopes of 17 straight wins, having also done so in Calcutta in 2001.

India became the first team from the subcontinent to win at the WACA Ground, where the bouncy and pacey pitch usually negates teams whose strength lies in spin bowling. Of touring sides, only West Indies (five time) and England (once) have previously won test matches at the WACA in the 35 tests played here.

It was Australia's first defeat in 11 WACA tests since losing to the West Indies in February 1997.

It was also Australia's first defeat in 26 home tests over four years, with the previous loss also against India, in December 2003 at the Adelaide Oval.

From the time young fast bowler Ishant Sharma dismissed Ponting in the morning, Australia struggled to challenge the target, with no one able to make the big century the task required.

Ponting squared up to a delivery that bounced and swung away to be caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip.

In what was the best spell of swing bowling in the match, Sharma (1-63) had Ponting playing and missing repeatedly before finally dismissing him.

Mike Hussey (45) and Andrew Symonds (12) were then trapped lbw soon after lunch.

Virender Sehwag was the unlikely star of the afternoon session, using his part-time offspin to dismiss Adam Gilchrist (15) and Brett Lee (0) in successive overs. Gilchrist was bowled around his legs as he attempted to sweep.

Sehwag took 2-24 from his eight overs. Australia was then reliant upon last recognized batsman Michael Clarke to guide the tail-enders, and he hit a fluent 81. When he went, stumped off Anil Kumble's legspin, Australia's chances were effectively at an end.

Johnson and Clark indulged in some lusty late-order hitting as the hosts got the runs required into double figures, with the crowd willing them towards what proved impossible.

Leftarm swing bowler Irfan Pathan (3-54), who accounted for both Australian openers, finally claimed Clark who edged a delivery to wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

R P Singh (2-95) bowled No.11 Shaun Tait soon after to end the match, leaving Johnson unbeaten after a maiden test half-century that included two sixes and five fours.

Australia leads the four-test series 2-1, with the final Test to begin in Adelaide claimed the last two wickets late on the fourth day. on January 24.
