Today nobody has the sensibility to make a historical epic

New Delhi, (IANS) Bollywood writer-director Muzaffar Ali, whose period film “Umrao Jaan” still stirs the souls of viewers, says nowadays no Indian director has the sensibility to make a historical epic.

“Poetry, painting, designing, writing all comes into a film, isn’t it? But it is not easy to make a film,” he said.

“Today nobody has the sensibility to make a historical epic. They lose out on the passion. To make a masterpiece, a filmmaker has to be charged with passion,” Ali told IANS in an interview.

Ali refrained from directly commenting on Ashutosh Gowariker’s period drama “Jodhaa Akbar”, which was released this month and has invited controversy over alleged distortion of facts.

But he said filmmakers should take extra care while dealing with history to avoid hurting sentiments.

“The broader objective of films is to unite human beings. It is a way of understanding humanity and its ethos. If you are not sensitive to it, it (film) is the wrong medium for you and you might end up hurting someone’s sentiments,” he said.

“Filmmakers must be extra cautious about the feelings of others because you are not writing history. Instead, the subject is about those who were victorious,” the filmmaker said.

The artist, who is also a painter and designer, ventured into Bollywood with “Gaman” and most of his movies cater to niche audiences.

“I am trying to reinvent a new cinema for the world. I believe that the world would recognise me because of my work and the kind of work that I do.”

Kareena will wear Bikini inTashan Yash Raj Film

Yash Raj Films is all set to kick off the year 2008 in splendid style through “TASHAN”. The movie directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who was the screenplay & dialogue writer of mega hits like “Dhoom”, its sequel “Dhoom:2” and “Guru”, marks the return of one of the most loved on-screen pairs of Bollywood- Akshay Kumar & Saif Ali Khan.

With TASHAN, even Anil Kapoor makes a comeback to Yash Raj banner after a long gap of 15 years. His last film with the banner was “Lamhe” (1992), which also starred Sri Devi, Waheeda Rehman & Anupam Kher. The movie will also have Kareena Kapoor playing a very glamorous role. She will play the romantic interest of Akshay and Saif in the movie.

Akshay Kumar & Saif Ali Khan had a spate of successes, the biggest being Yash Raj’s very own “Yeh Dillagi”(1994) & director Sameer Malkan’s “Main Khiladi Tu Anaari” (1994). Apart from this, the pair was seen together in “Tu Chor Main Sipahi” (1996), “Keemat” (1998) and “Aarzoo” (1999). Saif has already been a regular with Yash Raj (“Hum Tum”, “Salaam Namaste” and the much recent “Ta Ra Rum Pum”), but Akki’s last flick with them was “Dil to Pagal Hai” (1998).

Anil Kapoor will be seen playing a negative role in the film. Although, he has played characters with negative shades but it would be his first role as a villain.

Director Vijay Krishna Acharya, also known as “Victor”, has journeyed from films to television to films. He became assistant to Kundan Shah on “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa” starring Shah Rukh Khan. Then he moved to television and scripted non-formulaic serials like “Son Pari”, “Just Mohabbat” and the popular “Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi” (he was the creative & story supervisor for the first 260 episodes). But he couldn’t resist himself and returned to big screen while lending his credits to “Dhoom”, “Dhoom:2”, “Pyaar Ke Side Effects” and “Guru”. TASHAN would be his debut as a director.

Halla Bol Review

Halla Bol is a war-cry used to create an awakening.

A small town god-fearing soul, a simpleton, Ashfaque Khan(Ajay Devgan), acts in street plays to bring about social awakening and also chases his dream to become a film star. Siddhu (a strident Pankaj Kapur) is his director & mentor while Sneha (Vidya Balan) is his love interest.

Destination Mumbai….the struggle. Finally, he gets his first break in movies after sacrificing his one rule in life “not to lie”. Sameer Khan, a star is born! Along with glory of stardom comes endorsements, wealth and splendor. Soon, he crosses the line of morality, by taking on double standards, arrogance, conceit. At one of the Page 3 parties, he witnesses the murder of Rashmi Sahni, an upcoming actress, by the sons of powerful politicians. Everyone keeps quiet as they let the culprits walk away. So does Sameer Khan.

The shock of witnessing the murder stirs his “zameer” and propels him back to his “Halla Bol” days. He names the killers and is promptly targeted by the goons working for the “moneybags” (Gaikwad and a Mallya lookalike). This results in mass hysteria and the common man then takes to the streets, slogans etc.

Brilliant performances by the lead actors & crisp, hard-hitting dialogues are the highlights of the film

The movie may not exactly set the cash registers ringing. Nevertheless, it is a sincere attempt by Rakjumar Santoshi to convey a strong social message and definitely needs to be applauded.

30 October 2007 (Sawf News) - Bollywood debutante Deepika Padukone finds it flattering that she is being compared with Aishwarya Rai and admits to having followed the former Miss World's career closely and taken inspiration from it to enter Bollywood.

"She is someone I have grown watching. I've been watching her ever since she won the Miss World. And she is partly responsible for me wanting to get into this industry," she told CNN-IBN.

Incidently Deepika made her debut in films playing a lead role in a Kannada film titled Aishwarya.

Deepika's first Bollywood film, Om Shanti Om, is set to premier November 8 at the Empire Cinema in London's Leicester Square and she admits to being nervous, anxious and a bundle of nerves, but in all probabilities is confident that with Shah Rukh Khan helming the project and playing the lead she has little to fear.

The 21-year-old plans to wear a dress by designer Manish Malhotra for the London premier.

"I will definitely be wearing Manish Malhotra. He is someone whose style I admire and it suits me a lot. He has styled the entire film for me and there is no one else I would go with for the premiere," she says.

Oh! We agree sweetheart, but doubt Vidya Balan would agree with that assessment.

Deepika is unfazed by the media comparison between her and debutant Sonam Kapoor whose film Saawariya is also slated for a Diwali release.

Commenting on the clash of the two big budget films she says:

"I'm sure they have also worked as hard as we have so I would like to wish them all the best."
